The Concept of Tazkiyah al-Nafs According to Al-Ghazali and Its Application in Preventing Violence in The Family

This research is a qualitative literature study that examines the concept of tazkiyah al-nafs according to Imam Al-Ghazali in Ihya’ ‘Ulum al-Din and its derivative works to formulate a model for preventing domestic violence. This research addresses the issue of domestic violence in Indonesia which is still rampant, while current prevention efforts are dominated by secular legal and psychological approaches that do not address the spiritual dimension as its destructive root. The research gap lies in the lack of studies that connect the practice of cleansing the soul (tazkiyah al-nafs) with strategies for preventing domestic violence, even though the Sufi tradition offers a systematic framework for moral transformation. To fill this gap, the study examines the concepts of tazkiyah that are relevant to human relations: akhlak muamalah (social ethics and concern for others), adab zawjiyah (husband-wife ethics and fostering compassion), and tarbiyah rabbawiyah (parental parenting patterns towards children that exemplify morality). The findings indicate that the application of these concepts can improve emotional control, strengthen compassion, encourage deliberation practices, and establish exemplary parenting patterns, thereby effectively preventing domestic violence. The hope of this research is to produce a spiritual preventive model that complements legal and psychological approaches and supports the realization of sakinah, mawaddah, and rahmah families through the integration of tazkiyah values ​​in domestic violence prevention programs.
